Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is an annoying but non-life-threatening condition characterized by irregular stool patterns, chronic abdominal pain, cramping, and bloating. Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms include chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation, and alternating bouts of both diarrhea and constipation. IBS is often a source of distress, which can significantly affect the sufferer's work and social life.
Although there is no known cure for irritable bowel syndrome, there are a number of natural remedies for IBS.
1. Diet
Changing dietary habits alone may alleviate IBS symptoms in some patients. Because it is hard to pinpoint which food group irritates the colon, people usually cut out a specific food group for a week and see how the body responds. Common trigger foods include things high in fat, fructose, and lactose (sugar in dairy products).
Diet rich in soluble fiber resolves constipation issues for some, but it may not reduce abdominal pain. Bananas, apples, oatmeal, and psyllium husks are great sources of soluble fiber.
2. Herbal Remedies for IBS
Peppermint in the form of peppermint oil capsules can relieve gas and pain symptoms of IBS. Herbal tea brewed from dill and fennel can also do the same.
Herbal supplements based on aloe vera is also highly effective at treating IBS symptoms.
